![]() There was no manual transmission option available for the SLK 32 AMG. The SLK 32 AMG introduced Mercedes’ new ‘SpeedShift’ 5G-Tronic (automatic) transmission, that allow for manual shifting of the gears, and faster automatic downshifts before overtaking. The car featured the same M112 engine as in the SLK 320, but has a helical twin-screw supercharger and water-to-air intercooler. The SLK 32 AMG was introduced in 2001, designed to rival the BMW M Roadster and Porsche Boxster S. After the 2000 facelift, the SLK 200 Kompressor was introduced to the worldwide market, replacing the SLK 200. The SLK 200 was exported and sold exclusively to Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Turkey, and Greece, and was only available with the Getrag five-speed manual transmission in most countries. Many of these options were standard on the SLK 32 AMG. Other available options included a 5-speed "Touch Shift" 5G-Tronic automatic transmission, heated seats, xenon headlamps, a premium Bose sound system, a trunk-mounted 6-CD changer, 8-way power seats, and a manually telescoping steering wheel. Wider wheels were also available on SLK 230 Kompressor models. Models could also be optioned with the AMG body design package, also sometimes called a "sport package" that features body colour side skirts, chromed tailpipes, 17-inch AMG alloy wheels on lower profile performance tires, and a sculpted front apron with black-mesh air intakes. Safety features include front and side driver and passenger airbags, anti-lock brakes, and electronic stability control. Standard equipment includes power seats, power windows, power steering, dual-zone climate control, dimmable interior mirror, and alloy wheels. The platform of the R170 Mercedes SLK is also used by the Chrysler Crossfire, which shares 80% of its components with the car. The wheelbase is also identical to the wheelbase of the 190SL and 300SL, at 2,400 mm (94 in). The R170 SLK is based on the W202 C-Class platform, sharing many drivetrain and chassis components, as well as using a shortened version of the floor pan. A German design patent was filed on 30 September 1993, with the final production version of the SLK introduced at the Turin Motor Show on 22 April 1996. The R170 Mercedes SLK is based on the SLK I Concept and SLK II Concept, which is a two-seater roadster concept car that features a folding metal electro-hydraulic roof, dubbed 'vario-roof' by Mercedes, and takes 25 seconds to operate. It was replaced by the Mercedes R171 SLK in 2004. SLK stands for the company’s design mission to create a sportlich (sporty), leicht (light) and kurz (compact) roadster, and is based on a shortened platform of the W202 Mercedes C-Class. The R170 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class is the first generation of the Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class range of compact luxury roadsters produced by Mercedes-Benz between 19.

“If you put it on cinema mode instead of vivid, it drops a lot due to softer elements like contrast. ![]() “Even with 2,000 lumens, once you start calibrating it, the peak brightness goes down,” he says. When Lin was looking at projectors for a small space in his home, brightness played a key role, as he needed something that would show up against a good deal of ambient light. “Anything less than 500 isn’t usable, it’ll lose all the contrast and black levels with ambient light,” he says, “It’s awful, it’s almost unwatchable.” He also notes that for projectors with built-in rechargeable batteries, the projector won’t shine at full brightness while on battery power, so it’s important to account for that if you’re planning on using it away from an outlet. Steinberg says a projector’s brightness, which is measured in lumens (the amount of light emitted), is one of the most important things to look out for in a projector. Here are some of the best portable projectors you can buy online. I also looked at reviews from our colleagues at The Verge. To find out what makes a good portable projector stand out, and what to avoid, I spoke with Mark Steinberg, a senior technologist at B&H Photo, as well as Eric Lin, a cinematographer based in Brooklyn. These compact projectors are all about convenience and portability, so they won’t be as bright or as sharp as a high-end projector, but for an impromptu movie night indoors or out, they can’t be beat. ![]() Once they’re connected to a streaming device, laptop, smartphone, or game console via Bluetooth or cables, they can play movies, YouTube videos, or any other type of multimedia (with some limitations due to Digital Rights Management protections more on that below). Also known as pico or pocket projectors, they are small, typically more affordable than their larger counterparts, and easy enough to move from room to room or bring to a rooftop hang or a BBQ. One nifty thing that sci-fi can do (but we can’t yet in the real world) is deploy biology-protecting tech at the touch of a button. The Fifth Element (1997): Mondoshawan spacesuits have tiny lights along the exterior. A blinking red alert on the surface of a spacesuit could draw attention to the individual with the problem, and make finding them easier. When things are glowing steadily, it means the life support functions are working smoothly. Though nothing yet in the survey tells us what these lights might be for, it stands to reason that one purpose might be as a simple and immediate line-of-sight status indicator. Given that sci-fi technology glows, it is no surprise to see that lots and lots of spacesuits have glowing bits on the exterior. Look for the white plume in the left image and a dark plume on the right. Though not presented as such, the suit certainly confirms for any onlooker that the wearer is breathing and the suit functioning.Īlien (1979): The away team’s suit exhales as they walk the alien wreckage. ![]() In the movie Alien, as the landing party investigates the xenomorph eggs, we can see that the suit outgases something like steam-slower than exhalations, but regular. There are some non-interface biological signals for observers. Crowe’s medical monitor in Aliens (1986). Remote monitoring of people in spacesuits is common enough to be a trope, but has been discussed already in the Medical chapter in Make It So, for more on biometrics in sci-fi. Sunshine (2007): Cassie warns Capa that he’s using a lot of oxygen. We see a brief view of her bank of screens that include his biometrics. Similarly, in Sunshine, when Capa and Kaneda perform EVA to repair broken solar shields, Cassie tells Capa to relax because he is using up too much oxygen. Sunshine (2007): Truman asks spacewalker Shelby to calm down since his vital signs are stressed. This is the only food or drink seen in the survey, and it is a simple mechanical interface, held in place by material strength in such a way that he needs only to tilt his head to take a drink. The one example of sustenance seen in the survey appears in Sunshine, we see Captain Kaneda take a sip from his drinking tube while performing a dangerous repair of the solar shields. There are also no nods to toilet necessities, though in fairness Hollywood eschews this topic a lot. Mission to Mars (2000), McConnell verifies that the team can remove their helmets. ![]() There are some for low oxygen level warnings and testing conditions outside the suit, but these are more outputs than interfaces where interactions take place. Unfortunately, the survey doesn’t reveal any interfaces being used to control temperature, pressure, or oxygen levels. Additionally, the medical and psychological status of the wearer should be monitored to warn of stress states and emergencies. If the suit is to be warn a long time, there must be some accommodation for food, water, urination, and defecation. Even if temperature, pressure, humidity, and oxygen levels are kept within safe ranges by automatic features of the suit, there is still a need for comfort and control inside of that range. There are probably damned fine psychological reasons to not show astronauts their own biometric data while on stressful extravehicular missions, but there is the issue of comfort. Spacesuits must support the biological functioning of the astronaut. |
